Chapter 4: 4
Third: Whisperings of Satan

We knew that already 92% of the concerns of human beings are assumptions and whisperings and obsessions, in other words, things that haven’t happened, but things that may occur. Obsessions are one of the most frightening things. There are those who suffer from terrifying dangers, and there are those who suffer from terrifying ideas. There are thousands of different obsessions that terrify mankind:

There are obsessions concerning health and disease, success and failure, acceptance and rejection from others

There are intellectual obsessions, such as: Does God exist or not?  Am I a believer or not?  Does God take care of me or not?  Does God forgive me or not?

There are those who have obsessive evil thoughts about God that nag their minds, or evil words about the Holy Spirit, or others.

Satan has used these whisperings and thoughts to steal our peace from us.

Christ defeated the thoughts of Satan
We can clearly see this approach in the warfare of Satan with Christ in Matthew 4 and in Luke 4. "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread ... If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here.” And the devil repeats this phrase: “If you are the Son of God.” From this phrase, we clearly see a methodical skepticism:

Are you the Son of God or not?
Are you able to turn the stones into bread or not?
Are your needs physical or spiritual?
Does God care for you or not?

This is what the devil does with us, bringing a question or idea to our minds, making us speculate thousands of thoughts. As he did with Eve, querying, “Did God really say?”

But we see here how Christ faced the arrows of the devil.
He used the sure and effective weapon: the Word of God.

All three times, He answered that “It is written…”

There is no force that can defeat the whisperings of the devil except the Word of God, for it can shape your internal dialogue and the thoughts of your mind. It is also able to destroy all your assumptions and obsessions of Satan. Scripture says that “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10: 4, 5).

Let God use His Word within you to defend you from the whisperings of Satan.

Do not argue and do not discuss, do not analyze or respond to the thoughts and whisperings of the devil, but answer back from the written Word of God.

Use the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, to respond on your behalf to every attack of the devil upon your mind.

And learn always to respond as your Master did:  “It is written.”
And when he attacks you with what is written, learn to answer “It is also written,” as your Master did.

The Bible says in Proverbs 6, of the Word of God: “Bind them continually upon your heart; Tie them around your neck. When you roam, they will lead you; when you sleep, they will keep you; and when you awake, they will speak with you.  For the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light; Reproofs of instruction are the way of life.”

Be filled with the Word of God, for it is written, “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” (Psalm 119: 11).  “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly” (Colossians 3: 16). When you are filled with God's Word, God will use His Word within you to defeat all your fears, and every attack of Satan on your mind.

Through these three examples to conquer fear - the terror of death and the tragedies of life, the whisperings of Satan - we find that there are three things that cause us overcome the three fears:

1 - Concerning the terror of death: The Cross and work of Christ is the greatest power against the fear of death. The cross, the machine of death and execution which frightened even the bravest and strongest, has now become the secret of pride and peace of the believer. Christ Jesus “has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (2 Timothy 1: 10).

2 – Concerning the tragedies of life: “For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now… Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” (Romans 8: 22, 26).  The Spirit of God within you intercedes for you, with groanings which cannot be uttered, and He helps in your weaknesses, and He turns you from your memories of the past, and the tragedies of life, and reminds you of the ways of God and the Word of God.

3 – Concerning the thoughts and whisperings of Satan: You have the Word of God, the only Divine weapon capable of demolishing all assumptions of the enemy, “the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God” (Ephesians 6: 17).

And as long as you take benefit from
the work of God in Christ for you,
the Spirit of God dwelling inside you,
the Word of God filling your heart,
you will not be afraid of anything.
